But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and way, and away,
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.
But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.
One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.
This is the poem that Coach Tinker read and discussed in our Sunday meeting. Read through the poem carefully and leave a comment that describes how this poem speaks to you. Especially notice the lines in the 3rd stanza that are in bold print. What does it mean to 'set your sails' in such a way that the 'gales' do not determine the path? Leave a comment, and check back often to respond to the comments of others. Have fun with this 'online discussion."

i determine the way i go not eveyone else
everyone's uniqueness is determined by the choices that they make and what they choose to do with what they are given.
the last stanza suggests that you can make out of any situation what you want, it is simply your perception and additude about things.
Your life is determined by your choices, and they can either lead you towards your goal or completely off course.
"'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go."
I think it means that you decide your path and your responsible for your actions instead of the people around you.
"Tis the set of the sails and not the gales, that tells the way we go." To me this says that, we as teens are caught up in the next new thing we never think of what tomorrow might bring and we usually dont prepare for it until it gets here. Together we need to overcomethis and start planing ahead.
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
I feel that this means that people are usually trying to keep up with things that they shouldn't be worried about.
& That we should all try to do things that concern with making us all a better human being for ourselves and for the society around us.
The poem basically says there are two roads in life to choose from. The high road and the low road. We determine our own path in life, not anyone else. You are responsible for your own actions and every decision you make.
In other words: YOU decide what way you go. Other forces do not decide for you only because they can't. If you succeed or fail in life depends on your actions not on where you grew up, who your parents are, or anything else.
I believe it means that you have to take the path that you think is best, not what everyone else thinks is best for you.
This poem is talking about your direction in life. The third line, "'Tis the set of the sails And not the gales, That tells the way we go." is explaning that your circumstances don't direct the course of your life, but instead it is your ideas and actions that do.
You decide the course of your life and where and how you get there in life, and just as important,
when you'll get there.
Life may challenge you in many ways; however, you decide how to handle these struggles. Any person has the ability to choose between a life of passion and acceptance or a life of desolation.
"'Tis the set of the sails And not the gales, That tells the way we go." - To me it means tht it's the way you live your life and the path you decide to take that determines the way you go in life.
"Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells us the way we go."
i think this is telling that only one person can make the descion to do the right or wrong thing and that is yourself and only yourself, and no one else should be able to bend you to do the wrong thing
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
i believe this means that only you can decide which way you really want to go, that someone else cannot decide for you and make you happy.
"Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells us the way we go."
This quote is saying that you have to make your own decision and sometimes its tough, but you have to take the right path and prosper from making the right decision. The path you choose can determine you future.
the choices that we make in life are our own..whether those choices are deemed wrong or right by our society and even more importantly- by ourselves..we are expected to stand by those choices and move in the particular direction that our choices carry us so that we may make further choices that carry us in further directions..it is our job as individuals to make the choices that will carry us in the further directions that will lead to a positive life rather than negative.
This poem is very self-explanatory. It is obviously trying to give a two dimentional way of thinking which could be put quite simply as the easy/low way or the hard/high way. However, the poem also adds the lines about the misty flats where the rest drift to and fro to express the mediocrity of the world and society. This poem is attempting to inspire the very same concept that Alex and Brett Harris are essentially promoting. "Do hard things." The poem also enhances the aspect of choosing your own road despite hardships and tribulations that you may face by adding the last few lines. Furthermore, the main emphasis revealed in this poem is to strive to not only be yourself but to be extrordinary by choosing the right roads and expanding yourself beyond the norm despite road blocks that you may encounter along the way.
Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
What this says is to let your sails guide the way instead of the strong wind. We all know that going against the current is hard and you get caught up, but this is saying no matter how hard the wind is blowing or in what direction we should stick to the course that we have set instead of getting off. In life, we have our path set by Christ and the "gales" could be friends, activities, etc. that will try and get us off course but keep eyes on prize and we can get through it
What this says to me is that everyone in life deals with the same stresses and the same storms in our lives. Everyone feels the "gales" in our life at some point or another. But your attitude, your mindset, your faith, and your will to move on are what decide the direction you take in life. This reminds me of a quote I was told recently. It says "When you are feeling down and you want to give up, instead of telling God how big the storms in your life are, tell the storms in your life how big GOD is." This goes to show that no matter what storm or "gale" you may face in your daily life, your faith in God, positive mindset, and a christlike attitude will always get you through the day. That is what this poem says to me.
